STATE CLASS AA SEMIFINALS 2007
LOYALSOCK 35 ....... DELONE CATHOLIC 14
“This whole group is special. They love to play and to play for one another. The dedication is unbelievable.”
.... Coach Dick Delaney
CLASS AA SEMIFINALS - LOYALSOCK VS. DUNMORE
Saturday - December 8th - 1 p.m. - Shamokin High School
TWO DOWN AND TWO TO GO
LOYALSOCK ADVANCES TO THE FINAL FOUR
For the first time in the history of the school’s football program the Lancers advanced to the final four in PIAA division 2-A state playoffs. This has been accomplished, in no small part, by the hard work and dedication of all the coaches and team members.
Most of the notoriety of the team’s accomplishments, as highlighted by the newspapers, has centered on the big playmakers, the scorers; Shane Carey, Austin Knighton, Robbie Wright, Jesse Eggerton, Nick Tate, Jamie Van Fleet, Braydon Shaible, and Jackson Person. But every one of those guys acknowledges that a large measure of their success is due to the unsung heroes of the offensive line. Every game Bobbie DeLullo, Shawn McMahon, Rick Hill, Steve Hill, Steve Dewar, Pat Green, Don Kinney, Nate Fink and Andy Psik have given everything they had to dig down, root out and move the opposing line off the ball. They’ve opened holes, sealed lanes, and hustled down field for one more block all season long. Without these guys in the trenches every week, the Lancers wouldn’t be where they are today.
And so it’s been all season long, especially the past two weeks, the offensive and defensive lines have dominated the line of scrimmage. The improved play of Brian Losell, Nick Hepburn, and Bret Levy, along the defensive front has made it possible for the Lancer Linebackers to excel.
The defense has grown stronger and stingier; contesting every pass, intercepting many, hitting harder, causing fumbles, gang tackling, staying home, and reading their keys. The defense is now matching the play of the offense in terms of being a force to be reckoned with. As one local paper put it, "The Lancers are firing on all cylinders."
Shane Carey has been throwing the ball with authority. His receivers have been making all the right moves to get free and catch the ball. The running backs, Knighton and Tate, continue to deliver their one-two punch putting opposing defenses on their heels. If the defense stacks eight in the box to stop the run, the team takes to the air like eagles on the wind. If the defenses double up on Wright then Eggerton, Shaible, and Van Fleet have a field day.
That’s what we’ve seen since the playoffs began. The Lancers have been improving every week. Hopefully the team’s intensity, pride, and dedication to each other will see them through to a trip to Hershey Park December 15th.
Aside from the host of underclassmen who have contributed immensely to the success of this year’s squad, tribute must be given to the rest of the underclassmen, the guy’s that comprise the JV squad. Without these guys coming out day after day, running drills, playing their role as the scout team, the Lancers wouldn’t have had the success they’ve enjoyed. Football is, above all things, a team sport. The team is only as strong as its weakest player. The Lancers have worked hard together as a team so that there is no weakest player. They’ve become, in the truest sense of the word, a team of brothers.
